The Definitive Guide to Built Heritage. Since 1980.
In 1980, a set of design standards and the first ever Heritage Handbook was developed by Mary Aileen (Sandy) Smith and Phoebe Anne Magee, two early leaders in the cause of heritage conservation in Saint Andrews. They worked to document the town’s rich and diverse architectural and historic landscape, to inform the public of its value, how it might be conserved, and led projects to rehabilitate several heritage properties. Their efforts over the years were exemplified in the first edition of the Handbook in 1980, of which they were the co-editors. Their work demonstrated in a very tangible way the mission and purpose of Saint Andrews Civic Trust, to preserve and protect the built and cultural heritage of the town.
