A Provincial Landmark
Pendlebury Lighthouse is designated a Local Historic Place for its architecture and for its association with the family that operated it for nearly 100 years. It is recognized for its style of construction, for providing guidance to vessels entering Saint Andrews Harbour for 190 years and for its continued use as a community landmark. It was built in 1833 on Indian Point next to a busy wharf on the northeast side of the harbour. It is the oldest lighthouse on the mainland of New Brunswick, and third oldest in the province.
One of only eight octagonal lighthouses in New Brunswick, it stands 13 metres above the high water mark. The original light had 4 lamps and reflectors and was illuminated with oil. A unique feature of the lantern room is the dozen small panes of glass that make up each of its eight windows.
Pendlebury Lighthouse is also recognized for its association with the family that operated it from the 1840’s until 1938. John Pendlebury came from England to serve at the Machias Seal Island lighthouse keeper but was later transferred to Saint Andrews. He served as the keeper until his death in 1853. His son, George, then operated the lighthouse. The last light keeper was Miss Emma Pendlebury, who tended it until the closing of the lighthouse in 1938. Used until WWll by the local yacht club, the light has stood only as a landmark since the 1920s.
The lighthouse now sits only a few metres from its original site after being saved by the Saint Andrews Civic Trust.

Threatened by Climate Change.
Originally restored by the Saint Andrews Civic Trust in 2001, significant weather events in 2023/24 caused damage to the structure and shoreline. Rising sea levels and stronger winds due to climate change are putting this historic landmark at significant risk. This Lighthouse Preservation Fund will restore and re-paint the lighthouse itself along with funding extensive upgrades made to the boardwalk and shore where it resides at the end of Patrick Street. The goal of the fund is to protect it today as well as ensure there are funds in place to further protect it in the future.
To help protect the site, stone will be added to further protect the shoreline as well as the raising of the wall along the boardwalk to further prevent flooding to both the lighthouse and nearby street. Additional work to make it more accessible to those with mobility issues are also part of the plan, as is a new sign that tells the story of the lighthouse’s history along with a scannable QR-code to the Civic Trust’s website to learn more about its rich history and importance to the town.
The end goal is to make the space more accessible and ensure that not only the damage from the recent storms is repaired but that these changes to the perimeter boardwalk and shoreline will help protect it from future damage caused by climate change - specifically high-wind events and storm surges during high-tide.
