About the Saint Andrews Civic Trust

The Saint Andrews Civic Trust (SACT) is a registered not-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, stewardship, and interpretation of the historic built environment and cultural landscape of Saint Andrews. Through advocacy, education, restoration projects, and community partnerships, SACT works to ensure that the town’s architectural heritage is protected and meaningfully sustained for future generations.

As SACT enters a new phase of growth marked by major preservation initiatives, capital projects, and expanded fundraising efforts - we are seeking to strengthen our Board of Directors with skilled, committed volunteers who can provide practical expertise and strategic leadership.

Opportunity

SACT is currently recruiting Volunteer Board Members to join a working board that plays an active role in governance, oversight, and strategic support of the organization’s mission.  We are particularly interested in candidates who bring professional experience and functional expertise.

Our goal is to build a balanced, skills-based board capable of supporting complex projects, funding initiatives, and long-term organizational sustainability.

Priority Skills & Experience

While all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply, SACT has identified the following areas as priority needs for the Board at this time:

  • Project Management: Experience managing complex projects, ideally within construction, heritage restoration, or capital initiatives. Familiarity with grant-funded or phased projects is an asset.
  • Funding & Grants: Demonstrated experience in grant research, application writing, compliance, reporting, and/or strategic fundraising. Experience with government, foundation, or heritage-based funding programs is highly desirable.
  • Legal Expertise: Background in legal or contract law, particularly as it relates to not-for-profit governance, property, agreements, risk, or regulatory compliance.
  • Architectural / Engineering / Heritage Preservation: Technical knowledge of heritage conservation, architecture, engineering, or building restoration—beyond general historical interest. Experience with historic materials, structural assessments, or conservation standards is a strong asset.

Additional skills that would strengthen the Board include:

  • Local Community Outreach and Stakeholder Engagement
  • Strategic Fundraising and Campaign Development
  • Finance, Banking, Accounting, or Tax Expertise
  • Government Relations (Municipal, Provincial, or Federal)
  • Organizational Leadership and Business Management
  • Human Resources or People Operations (particularly related to part-time or project-based resources)
  • Not-for-Profit Governance and Fundraising Strategy

Time Commitment

Board members typically serve a term of up to three years, with the possibility of renewal.

Participation includes regular board meetings, committee involvement, and engagement on specific initiatives aligned with individual expertise.

This is a volunteer position; however, board members play a meaningful and impactful role in shaping the future of one of New Brunswick’s most significant heritage communities.

Selection Process

SACT is committed to a transparent and skills-based recruitment process.
Applications will be evaluated using a competency matrix aligned to the priority skills outlined above.

Short-listed candidates will be invited to in-person interviews with members of the Board.
Final appointments will be made by the board and with the objective of creating a well-balanced, high-functioning board.

How to Apply

Interested candidates are invited to submit:

  1. A brief letter of interest outlining relevant experience and areas of contribution
  2. A current résumé or professional biography

Applications and inquiries may be sent to: [email protected] by February 28, 2026.

Help shape the future of St. Andrews’ historic legacy.

Join a board where expertise, stewardship, and community impact truly matter.

Saint Andrews Civic Trust Has a New Look and Website

The Saint Andrews Civic Trust is excited to reveal its new brand and website designed to build awareness of the trust and its role as well as to educate and inform locals and visitors of the many stories and heritage places within Saint Andrews. The new site was officially launched on Friday the 26th of May.

The new branding and website were created by Mr. James Geneau, a new resident of Saint Andrews and volunteer at the trust with more than 25 years of marketing experience and more than 20 years of volunteer board experience in heritage advocacy. The new logo is a modern and minimalist representation of the Pendlebury Lighthouse, which was saved and restored by the Saint Andrews Civic Trust in the early 2000s. It is designed to be bolder and more modern, to revitalize minds and inspire a whole new generation interested in history and heritage preservation.

Complimenting the new branding is a new website offering details on the architectural significance and related stories of the past residents or proprietors of more than 70 heritage homes and estates, 35 local businesses, and 14 civic spaces. All of which are recognized as being part of the Saint Andrews National Historic District. Each property has images, a map, and the stories of the original owners and some rather famous visitors who may have stayed there. It also explains the architectural style of the home and includes all the design elements of significance.

“We are so excited by the new branding and website - especially the possibilities it brings for the future for the society” commented Barbie Smith, President of the Saint Andrews Civic Trust. “James spent over a year cataloguing and digitizing every record, volunteering his evenings and weekends. This new site means we can share the historic stories of Saint Andrews with a much larger audience and attract even more people to our beautiful town. The refreshed brand he developed is also important because it aligns with the fresh ideas and thinking we are seeing from countless newcomers to our town, who are making it flourish and take real pride in its history.”

In addition to the brand and website, the Saint Andrews Civic Trust has made its first leap onto social media, launching an Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter account. These new channels will be where the trust plans to share stories, historic pictures, and more related to the rich history of beautiful Saint Andrews-by-the-Sea. Those interested in learning more about the new website and the work of the society can do so at the upcoming Open House being held at the Charlotte County Courthouse on Sunday afternoon, June 4th, from 2 – 4pm.
